Synopsis: The coronation of Alessio di Rossetti as the third Marquis of Sanctus Irae.
A Magnificent Ballroom
Thousands of tall, slow burning white candles give the few dozen chandeliers of well-polished gold a beautiful other-worldly feel and adds a warm glow to the room. Table after elaborately carved table resides at one end of the room, each complete with an ornate white lace table cloth. The floor is a rich marble with onyx undertones, polished to a mirrored finish that reflects the dancing fiery orbs above with faerie-like appearance. The walls are papered in rich hues of crimson, cream and an extravagant amount of gold-leafing. Towards the opposite
end of the banquet hall from the seating area, a platform has been erected and upon it a throne of deep mahogany with precious jewels set into the armrest and head of the seat amid intricate scrollwork rests in all its glory. Above it, a shield, bearing the Di Rossetti crest of a peregrine falcon snapping an arrow in its beak while mid-flight announces the identity of the throne's occupant. To a side and halfway between the throne platform and the dining and seating area, another platform is reserved for a group of hired minstrels. Ribbons of crimson and gold spiral from and form the various bows and decorations as
well as each of the centerpieces for the tables.

The soft shades of night began to fall once more on the city of Sanctus Irae, but this was not to be any ordinary night. Hundreds were gathering to a new ballroom, which had only recently been erected to serve as the location at which the coronation ceremony of Alessio di Rossetti would take place. Guards stood tall by the entryway, checking each arrival to assure that they had an invitation. More guards patrolled the interior of the building, a measure of security for all within. Already, the noise within the ballroom was on the rise. The minstrels who were hired for the evening were preparing all of their instruments for what was likely to be a long night, and those who were wise enough to arrive early were taking the best seats that they could.
Within a small chamber which was built off of the main ballroom, the Marquis waited to be called out into the ballroom for his coronation, and so that the ball could begin. He was nervous, his hands shaking and his breath rapid, but he tried to conceal this as much as possible. [Alessio]
Standing at the front of the ballroom the old priest pulls at his thick starched collar. His robes still showing the crease marks of many years of being folded and put away for events such as this. He attempts to suck in his gut as it stretches against the once loose fitting robes. He watches as the citizens arrive, teetering back and forth on his heels with his hands folded behind his back. As he waits in nervous anticipation, having been so long since he has had to do such a lofty type ceremony. He licks his palm and smoothes down the sides of his crown of hair surrounding the bald center of his head. [Alleniomori]
Gliowien enters cautiously, her emerald eyes peering through the mask she carries as she makes her way over to the far end of the dance hall. Her gown flows about her and she looks as if she was meant for such surroundings except that she appears more skittish than a mouse during a mustang stampede. During her trip back to Serelia with her aunt, her grief-stricken state had allowed her aunt to keep her away from anything to do with court or other such prestigious gatherings that would make her uncomfortable. Now, however, she has found her way back into what is, for her, a dangerous and frightening world of falseness and treachery. [Gliowien]
Talisha wasn't particularly thrilled about attending the coronation. It had nothing to do with the new marquis, no, but everything to do with the fact that she had not been seen outside the school in some time and was becoming something of a recluse. However, she could not refuse to attend, so, invitation in hand, she took the carriage from the Conservatory to the ball, her best staff with her to use as her cane for the evening and wondered if perhaps she would know anyone else in attendance. [Talisha]
Kadgeon sat in her carriage until her manservant opened the door for her. Gripping his hand lightly she stepped slowly and carefully, so as not to step on her gown, from the carriage. Nodding and smiling at her manservant she took the invitation that he held out for her. Walking to the entryway she handed the invitation to the guard who moved to the side to allow her entry. She kept her mask held up to her face as she looked around for the perfect seat. [Kadgeon]
The torch light glinted off Karzak's chain mail shirt, which had been cleaned until it shone. He refused to go without armor even here, though he had finally decided to leave his hammer at the barracks. His companion, an Elf, strode easily beside him in a forest green coat and matching breeches. Approaching the gate Karzak displayed his invitation to a young guardsman on duty, and arched a cool eyebrow at his look of surprise. Stories of Karzak and Evoran protecting the Marquis had been circling the barracks for several days now. Sighing softly to himself Karzak glanced at his companion before they continued into the main ballroom to pick seats. [Karzak]
Shaelle enters the ballroom alongside her niece, her own midnight blue evening gown flowing gracefully behind her as she holds her head up with her usual aristocratic air. She could feel Glia's obvious discomfort, and wished she had reconsidered attending the coronation ball, but she knew she had to attend--if only to support Glia as she reentered the lion's den of aristocracy. She knew it would reflect badly on both herself and Gliowien had neither of them been in attendance. She readjusted her slivery veil slightly as she made her way to the end of the dance hall. [Shaelle]
Alessio fidgeted with the ring upon his left finger, one of white gold which was etched in a similar design to his own seal. There had been many of these rings made especially for this occasion. Suddenly and without warning, a trumpet resounded across the hall to signal that the ceremony was about to begin. The last of the guests who were to attend were rushed into the room, those who had not yet arrived, could no longer gain entry. Soon, a burly guard was opening the door to Alessio's chamber, and pointing toward the platform upon which sat his throne. "It's time, Signor," the guard proclaimed, stepping back to allow the passage of his new lord.
Hurried steps guided the young man to his throne, where he immediately sat. Watching from behind, Ignati placed his hand upon his forehead. "M'lord," he whispered to Alessio, "this is not as we rehearsed. Rise!" Alessio ignored him, too consumed with his nerves to hear the command. [Alessio]
Standing at the side of the well placed altar in the far end of the ballroom the elder priest nods, signaling for the progression of the altar boys with the incense, traditional to the core, the scents of frankincense and myrrh waft from the held brassieres suspended on chains and held out from their long robed bodies. The priest eyes the assembled items, prepared for the ceremony itself to begin. [Alleniomori]
Talisha limped her way the gates, the guard and into the hall itself, taking in at her leisure, the extent of the decoration, elaborate hangings and overall finery. She was certainly impressed. After a few brief greetings to those she recognized, she makes her way to a seat with the aid of her staff and settles in for the festivities to begin. She was apparently just in time too as the trumpets began to sound as she smoothing out the folds of her pale blue gown, her eyes now on the dais. [Talisha]
Kadgeon sat in her chair and watched all those around her through her mask. As she looked at all the different people, her eyes came upon Shaelle and Gliowien and she smiled slightly even though they probably couldn't recognize her. Continuing to let her gaze roam the room she spotted the Lady Talisha, once again she smiled but kept gazing around until she came to the dais. Taking a deep breath she inhaled the incense that began to fill the room. [Kadgeon]
"I have never seen so many false smiles and ill-gotten gains in my life." whispered Karzak as he scanned the nobles present for the coronation. His elven companion smiled briefly before replying in a whisper, "Be careful of your actions here, free-roaming emotions could cause you great trouble later on." Nodding curtly Karzak scanned the room once more before finding a pair of seats close to the front along the west wall. Pointing to them he told Evoran, "Those look like good seats, shall we go claim them?" Seeing Evoran's nod they both started out across the ballroom. [Karzak]
As she took her seat and settled herself at the table next to Gliowien, Shaelle straightened her skirts slightly as she politely smiled to the other attendees and took in her surroundings, pleased with the extent and care taken to decorate the ballroom for tonight's event. [Shaelle]
Prina opens her long trailing cloak and unfastens it as she steps through the ballroom doors. She hands it to a servant and saunters in towards a seat in the back. Her dark emerald eyes sparkle and shine a she glances about to see who else is here. As she settles into a chair she crosses her legs and sits up straight, sensing none of her kind close, she glances up towards the clergyman and wrinkles her nose as if to shake the stench of purity from her senses. [Prina]
"Rise!" hissed Ignati once more, and Alessio immediately jumped up and to attention. At this particular moment, he seemed more like a jester than a proper nobleman. "Quit being such an idiot, Signor. Your parents, nay, your whole family would be greatly disappointed if you make a fool of them!" the Trademeister added. Looking to the priest, he then gave the signal to begin the ceremony. [Alessio]
The priest begins to chant softly as he nods towards Alessio. He closes his eyes a moment and feels the holy spirit moving within him as he begins to chant. ‘Credo in Spiritum Sanctum; sanctam ecclesiam catholicam; sanctorum communionem; remissionem peccatorum; carnis resurrectionem; vitam oeternam.’ The altar boys move aside, allowing a clear path for Alessio to approach the altar. [Alleniomori]
Distracted as she was, Gliowien still managed to catch Shaelle's smile...even through the gossamer-esque veil and the younger elven woman gives an uncertain smile of her own. "I'm not sure if I can handle this, Aunt Shaelle," she whispers quietly to the woman beside her. The sudden jump of the soon-to-be Marquis jolts Glia slightly and she looks with surprise up to the platform at the far end of ballroom. Her brow furrows in momentary concern at the obviously anxious state of Alessio, though it is well-hidden behind her feline mask. [Gliowien]
Talisha watches the proceedings, raising a brow at the abruptness at which the Marquis takes to his feet. She readjusts her hold on her staff and watches on, hoping the affair will end quickly so she can return to the Conservatory.
Kadgeon raised asingle dark brow as the Marquis jumped to his feet. She was glad for the mask she held to her face, she would hate to have to explain to someone the look of amusement on her face at the moment. As the priest chanted it took all she had to suppress a shudder. She tried to keep a frown from playing on her lips as she continued to listen. The moment she felt the presence of another of her kind she closed off her emotions and mind, and gazed around once more subtly looking for the other person. [Kadgeon]
A puzzled look crossed Karzak's face when he saw the Marquis snapping to attention like a raw recruit getting called down. Seeing Evoran shrug his shoulders he immediately put it out of his mind. Leaning closer to Evoran so he could whisper, "I hope this starts soon, I am unused to sitting for so long" A brief smile flashed across the elf's face as he replied, "Patience my old friend, you always forget patience." [Karzak]
Shaelle whispers to her niece, "It is alright Gliowien, we don't have to stay... We can leave whenever you'd like..." The soon-to-be Marquis's sudden jump to attention causes the Archduchess to raise her eyebrow in slight interest, redirecting her attention away from Gliowien. [Shaelle]
"Signor, you didn't wear your chain, did you?" Ignati asked as Alessio prepared to approach the priest. Alessio nodded. Ignati, visibly angry, shook his head. "What are we to do with you!" he growled. Signalling for a pair of guards, he immediately instructed for them to begin the removal of Alessio's chain shirt. In a few quick moments, the robe, tabard and shirt which Alessio had worn were now stripped from his person. Bare-chested, he approached the priest and kneeled before the altar, as was rehearsed. [Alessio]
Picking up the brassier the priest walks around Alessio as he kneels shirtless at the altar. He places the drifting incense aside and picks up the holy oil in one hand, the other dipping into the warmed contents. Carefully he anointed the Marquis in three places, on his head, breast, and arms, which signifies glory, valor, and knowledge. Each touching of the oil was accompanied with a corresponding prayer. Alleniomori then picks up the heavy robe with the seal of Sanctus Irae emblazoned on the back and wraps it over his shoulders. Alleniomori follows by placing the crown on his head and stepping aside to allow him to rise and take his place as Marquis. [Alleniomori]
Below the mask, Glia's features briefly twist in a scowl at how Ignati and the guard were behaving, though she couldn't help but wonder what Alessio had done to cause all that. A barely audible sigh escapes her as she reasons within herself that it wasn't her expertise to figure out political arguments or anything to do with court etiquette. Her slender arm adjusts the mask a little as she watches the goings-on. [Gliowien]
Talisha watches the proceedings, finding them, well, interesting. The young seemed quite nervous. She however, was growing increasingly uncomfortable in her seat and shifts again to ease the ache in her leg. After the crown is placed on the new Marquis' head, she turns her attention to the room, casually looking over those in attendance. [Talisha]
Makavelli quietly walks up behind where Talisha and the children sit. He winks at the kids and slides his strong hands over Talisha's shoulders, giving them a reassuring squeeze. He then silently moves to sit in an empty seat by her and the children.
Kadgeon once again raised an eyebrow and decided that she didn't know if she liked the new Marquis. He seemed to be a little, spineless for lack of a better word. For some reason he seemed to just do whatever Ignati said. Like the rest she waited for the Marquis to rise before moving or clapping or anything else. [Kadgeon]
Watching the ceremony with half-hearted interest Karzak glances around the room. Seeing some of the guests nervously eyeing the priest he memorized their faces. People like that could cause trouble for the church. Pitching his voice so it could not carry he spoke to his friend, "Have you noticed anything...odd about our guests tonight?" Evoran glanced at the dwarf with concern, "No, perhaps if you were more patient you would not see hidden dangers in every shadow." Nodding to himself Karzak now watches with genuine interest as the crown is placed upon the Marquis' head. [Karzak]
Prina cocks her head sideways as she watches with sudden interest at the pale white skin as it is revealed. She bites her bottom lip and smiles, her thickly-accented whisper only heard by those closest to her, "Now this is more like it." Her eyes sparkle as she watches his body anointed. Her fingers trail down to her waist as she watches the coronation process. [Prina]
Rising, Alessio looked over the hall, a confident grin upon his face. Making a quick signal to the minstrels, he assures that they do not begin until he has had his say. "Ladies and gentlemen of Irae," he begins, but very suddenly he is interrupted by Ignati. "Signor, I think you should wait until after the first number to give a speech." Now, it is the Marquis' turn to be angry. With his face turning a deep beet-red, he spoke, "Ignati! Come forward!" The Trademeister did so, obedient to his lord in actions if not words. Upon his arrival, the Marquis promptly punched him on the jaw, forcing the Trademeister to his knees. Blood was already dripping onto the dais when Alessio added, "I hereby strip you of your title as Trademeister of Irae." [Alessio]
Alleniomori’s duties completed, he turns to face the altar, instructing the altar boys to return the oils and incense to their place in the church. Forced to stay and mingle, he moves to the side of the ballroom and settles in with a bite of cheese to tide him over until the snacks are served. [Alleniomori]
Talisha smiles, reaching for Makavelli's hand as he takes the seat next to her own. Carefully leaning in close she whispers, "I did not think to see you here this evening, but I am certainly glad you have arrived. I need your help. I am not feeling well at all and need to leave, do you think it is possible to slip out unnoticed yet?" she asks, at about the point that the Marquis was turning an astonishing shade of red. "Oh my..." [Talisha]
Makavelli nods solemnly, his dark eyes filled with concern as he rises. Wrapping his cloak around her shoulders he whispers for the children to follow as he pulls her close. He hears over his shoulder the removal of the Trademeister. He will deal with learning the politics another day, but tonight he must get his lady home safely to her estate. [Makavelli]
Kadgeon smiled widely being sure to keep her fangs hidden as she stood and started to clap her hands in the stunned silence of the room. She saw the Lady Talisha leave with a man she didn't know but did not move to follow. Instead she remained standing and curtsied in the direction of the new Marquis. Maybe he would do well after all. [Kadgeon]
Watching the Marquis turn red Karzak mutters something about a temper. He nearly jumped to his feet when the man punches the Trademeister and stripped him of his title. Shaking his head ruefully Evoran speaks to the dwarf, "This is why I tell you to be patient, things like this always happen when tempers flare." Briefly glaring at the elf Karzak turns his attention back to the altar and the scene unfolding. Watching the Marquis turn red Karzak mutters something about a temper. Easily noticible beneath the mask she holds, Glia gapes, her jaw dropping as she blinks repeatedly as if that might prove what she just saw to be a product of her own imagination and not the actual actions of the Marquis. Quite obviously...it doesn't work. "He's a brilliant madman," she murmurs to herself. While glad to see that the intimidating Ignatio was no longer Trademeister, the way in which it came about leaves Glia staring at the Marquis after a brief glance to her Aunt to detect her reaction to the latest turn of events. Upon hearing Kadgeon's beginning to clap, Gliowien follows suit. [Gliowien]
Shaelle's frown quickly breaks into a wide grin as she watches the new Marquis's actions, and claps along with Kadgeon and her niece.
Prina nods approvingly at the new Marquis display and rises in honor of his new position. Her hands smoothing over her long layered skirts from having sat so long. Her dark emerald eyes leaving him for only a moment as she catches a glimpse of red in a young halflings applause across the room. She cocks her head a moment, finding the night to bring her more information than she had bargained on. The city was indeed coming to a new age. [Prina]
The guards had already started to haul the former Trademeister from the dais as Alessio continued. "As I was saying, it is time for me to make an announcement. There is business which must be handled publicly, and this is some of that business." Looking about the room, Alessio stepped forward. "This city, as I understand it, has been under the boot of lawless brigands for some time. Many of its merchants have suffered these whelps and their 'taxes'. No longer! I suppose that, as my second act as your Marquis, I shall now name the future Arms Master of Irae." Alessio was interrupted for a moment as the Trademeister burst into a coughing fit. Suddenly, the violinist who had come with the minstrels began to move, pulling a small pipe from his violin and stuffing something within. All of this happened without being noticed by the Marquis, who continued, "I would like to invite Karzak Stonebl--" but suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, a small bolt struck his throat. It did not penetrate deep, and the Marquis was quick to remove the item. The wound was superficial, and bled only a little. What was not superficial, however, was the poison now coursing through the Marquis' blood. "Move the Marquis to safety!" A guard immediately shouted. A second pair made for the violinist, but he vanished almost immediately, as if some magical spell had hidden him from their sight. All was a rush, then, as the guardsmen on the dais began shoving Alessio towards his small chamber. [Alessio]
At the sight of projectile striking the Marquis and the guards coming forth the priest ambled forward as quickly as his rotund body would allow. He took from his large pockets cloth and placed it quickly to the wound as he was carried towards the small chamber. [Alleniomori]
Kadgeon quickly scanned the room and found Glia and Shaelle. Shoving panic stricken people out of her way she tugged at Glia's arm and motioned for her to follow. Using her magick to help move people out of her way she looked up at the guard barring her entry. 'Move it, I have one of the city healers with me.' This should have been foreseen. A new Marquis in town, yeah there was bound to be an assassination attempt. Boy did this city need a new Arms-Master, and quickly. [Kadgeon]
Hearing his name mentioned brought Karzak to fill attention just as the bolt appeared in the Marquis throat. Suddenly he roars, "Seal the doors! Nobody leaves until that man is in custody!" Launching into a crowd on the verge of panic Karzak shoves people out of his way as he makes a path to the dais so he could have a better view of the room. Evoran follows behind him, now wielding long bladed knives that had been concealed underneath his coat. Arriving at the dais he sees a guard trying to stop a healer from entering the Marquis' room. Addressing the guard trying to stop her, "You fool, move out of the way!" [Karzak]
As she watched the dart penetrate Marquis di Rosetti's throat, Gliowien jumps slightly and gulps as she focuses in on his features and the wound. It looked small, but looks could be deceiving. Glia leans to her Aunt and starts to whisper, "I will go see if -", but is cut off by Kadgeon's tugging. She followed after, thankful for her friend's assistance in speeding her way through the chaos. She clasps her golden clutch in her right hand, thankful to have thought to pack a few small medical supplies within its satin confines. [Shaelle]
Shaelle watched Kadgeon lead her niece towards the fallen Marquis, shaking her head as she resisted attempts by guards to prevent her from leaving the table. Watching the guards closest to the injured young man prevent Gliowien from approaching, she muttered, "_Now_ they go into overprotective mode. As if none of them saw this com--" Shaelle's rant was cut short as future Arms Master ordered the guard to to let her pass. [Shaelle]
Prina rises and fans herself. "Such a shame too, he had such possibilities." Her eyes sparkled with amusement as she made her way to the doors and out into the night to hunt fresh game. She didn't know if he would make it through the night, but if he did she knew she would meet him again and hoped it would be under less crowded circumstances. [Prina]
"Ladies, Gentlemen!" the Marquis cried as he wrestled free from the grasp of the guard, wiping away the last of the blood from his neck. "I assure you all, I am quite healthy! There is no need for all of this rushing about, nor a medic!" Brushing off his robes and righting the crown on his head, the Marquis forces his way toward the stage, and Karzak. "Signor Stoneblood, you have proven once again that you are perfectly capable. That is why I have named you the Arms Master of this city." Looking over the room, Alessio chuckled. "Please, my people, this little scratch is nothing compared to the wounds I sustained in my travels!" [Alessio]
Kadgeon stopped and raised an eyebrow. Letting her mask drop she took a closer look at the Marquis. He sure did know how to give people something to talk about the next day. He also knew how to test his people it would seem. Replacing her mask she made her way to stand in front of him and curtsied once more. 'Seeing as how you are safe from harm Signor I wish to take this time to welcome you to the City and wish you well. Also to congratulate you on becoming our new Marquis.' [Kadgeon]
Watching in surprise as the Marquis forces his way to the stage, Karzak nearly panics, "My Lord! You must let the healer see to you, it would be a terrible blow if you were to perish on the night of your coronation!" A very young guardsman finishes speaking with Evoran when the Marquis made it to the stage. The elf turned to Karzak and told him in a vexed voice, "It seems the assassin managed to escape through the doors before the guards could seal them. He needs to be found immediately." [Karzak]
Frowning at the Marquis' apparent lack of concern for his safety, Glia continues to approach, shaking her head. Her mask has long since been left at the table that she and her aunt had previously been seated at. "Signore di Rossetti, scratch or not, I insist that you sit still and let me examine the wound. You are the Marquis and if something happens to you, there will be more chaos and problems," Gliowien pleads in a firm but hushed tone. [Gliowien]
Shaelle takes a seat once again at the table as she takes a sip from a nearby goblet. Noticing the new Marquis's apparent lack of concern for his own safety and health, she shakes her head. "I thought I was attending a coronation ball, but apparently I've attended a play at the Theatre instead," she muses to herself as she continues to watch the scene unfold. [Shaelle]
"Karzak, Gliowien, please! Listen to the elf, Evoran!" Leaping from the stage, the Marquis snakes about within a group of guards as he speaks. "We need to find the assassin, and we need to kill him! There should be no more discussion of my health! I am absolutely fine!" Stopping before Glia, he adds for her benefit, "If I should feel awkward in the next few days, I assure you all that I will go and see someone who can take care of me. In the mean time, I would like to excuse myself!" Returning to the stage, Alessio shrugs his robe, and attempts to dress himself in his chain and tabard once more. "I suggest that we get to looking for this assassin, Karzak," the Marquis adds. "I want two groups. One for escorting our guests home, and a second for the hunt. Act quickly, or our violinist will escape into the night!" [Alessio]
Kadgeon frowned and shook her head as she walked towards the exit slowly. She would hunt for this would be assassin, but she didn't think he would be found tonight. Wrapping her cloak around her she held her mask tightly in her hands as she hid in the shadows of the night. [Kadgeon]
"File leaders, come to the stage immediately!" Karzak yells to be heard over the din. Singling out three of them, "You three will work under Evoran and escort the guests to their houses." Pointing to a file leader who had been on the guard nearly as long as Karzak himself, "You will pick 3 other file leaders and escort the Marquis to his villa." Nodding quickly to himself he rounds up the final four file leaders, "You four come with me, we will discuss this assassin before setting out to find him."
Giving a nod to Evoran and the elder guard Karzak turns towards the Marquis, "We will find this man swiftly, as you said, the law of the lawless brigands must be ended."
[Karzak]
Her new-found self-assurance dissipates as morning mist and Gliowien lowers her eyes and gives a respectful nod to Alessio. "At the first sign, Signore. Do not let such a matter wait," she murmurs, though loud enough to be sure he can hear. She shakes her head and walks quickly back to where Shaelle has reclaimed her seat. "Fool," she whispers angrily to herself once certain that she is far enough away to not be heard. Sitting once more beside Shaelle, Glia sighs, her face returning to its prior emotionless state. "Let's go soon, Aunt Shaelle. This is nothing but a fiasco and I would rather be away from so many people," Glia says, her voice soft and perhaps a little bitter. [Gliowien]
Taking her last drops from the goblet, Shaelle carefully places it down upon the table as she stands, straightening out the skirts of her gown and removing her veil. "I couldn't have said it better myself, Gliowien" she agreed, waiting for the guards to begin filing the attendees out of the ballroom. [Shaelle]
The Marquis would've objected, had a sudden wave of fatigue not overtaken him. Instead, Alessio simply nods, "to the villa for me. I trust the job will be handled well in your more-than-competent hands, Karzak. Good night!" [Alessio]
Nodding slowly Karzak begins to bow, "Good night My Lord, and Thank you." Turning to the four file leaders he had gathered he spoke, "It is time to get back to the barracks, we have plans to make." [Karzak]
